Dead Space iPhone Preview

Dead Space is coming next month for the iPhone and iPad. This adventure is designed to bridge the gap between the original Dead Space and the anticipated sequel, following Codename: Vandal into the mines of Titan. There will be many Necromorphs between the start of the game and daylight, so it's a good thing Electronic Arts packed this iOS edition with as much slice-and-dice as its console brethren.

I recently had a chance to give Dead Space a go on an iPhone 4 and try out two stages. The first was the descent into the mines on a speeding tram platform. Vandal was alone only for a few moments before Necros started pulling themselves up on to the tram, hoping to hitch a ride and suck out some life force, not necessarily in that order. With a few blasts from my laser cutter, the Necros were either outright dead or writhing on the ground in hopes of a killing blow. Thankfully, Vandal wears size 16 space boots capable of providing just that… to the face.

The second stage was inside the first level of the mines. I needed to get to the bottom of an elevator shaft, but as you might expect, the mechanisms weren't exactly agreeing with me. And wouldn't you know it, a bunch of Necros were guarding the power source for the elevators. Charging up the lasers and delivering different shaped strikes – thin line for cleaving away limbs or a huge cross pattern for maximum evisceration – emptied the catwalks of stinking Necromorphs.

I like that EA isn't going halfway here. Dead Space isn't necessarily loaded up with gore, but it does grab hold of as many elements from the successful console game as possible and squeeze them into what I thought was a very playable demo. Of course, there is still over a month to go before Dead Space hits the App Store, but considering how sharp the game looked earlier this month, I have high hopes it will only be further polished.

However, not everything in Dead Space is gravy and roses. EA is trying something here with In-App Purchases that I'm not entirely sold on yet. There are many weapons and upgrades to collect in Dead Space, but you can just buy your gear outright, including one of the new weapons: Plasma Saw. It's one thing to buy a little cheat like unlimited lives in Capcom's Ghosts n' Goblins. But buying up a bunch of equipment before you even know what fight lies ahead? Why would you rob yourself of the tension and suspense of a killer battle between you and a horde of Necromorphs by purchasing a battalion's worth of weapons?
